         Jusqu"à présent, l’IRM gère un réseau composé de 5 ceilomètres-LIDAR-Automatiques (ALC) permettant le suivi de la hauteur de la couche limite atmosphérique mais aussi la détection de panaches d"aérosols. Le premier ALC a été acheté en 2011 et doit être remplacé. Afin d"améliorer le suivi des panaches d"aérosols, l’IRM souhaite utiliser la technique de dépolarisation pour identifier le type d"aérosols ainsi que les nuages d"eau liquide ou de glace.

         L’ALC sera installé en extérieure à Uccle. L’instrument doit être résistant aux intempéries, fonctionner toute l"année et pouvoir être contrôlé visuellement à distance.

         Les objectifs de l’IRM sont :

         ‐mesurer la hauteur de la base des nuages.

         ‐de déterminer la hauteur de la couche de mélange (paramètre essentiel dans la prévision de la qualité de l"air) à partir du signal de rétrodiffusion atténué.

         ‐d"identifier les nuages liquides et constitués de glaces ainsi que la nature des couches d"aérosols.
