The Government of Tonga has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Statistical Innovation and Capacity Building in Tonga (SICBT) Project. The Tonga Statistics Department is the Implementing Agency and intends to apply part of the proceeds for the recruitment of three (3) Assistant Statisticians – Data Collection.

The primary objective of the three Assistant Statisticians is to provide essential support to the Economics team in collecting, processing, and compiling key economic statistics. These officers will assist in conducting the regular economic surveys required to establish and maintain the Building Material Price Index (BMPI), the Producer Price Index (PPI), and the Cost of Living Index.

  • Duration: Short-term position for 6 months, including a 1-month probationary period.
  • Tentative Start Date: 18 March 2026.
  • Location: The Assistant will be based at the TSD office in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.

The Assistant Statisticians will work under the management of the Head of Economics and TSD staff to:

  • Prepare and distribute survey questionnaires and data collection instruments.
  • Conduct follow-up communications with respondents to ensure timely data submission.
  • Maintain and update physical and electronic economic statistics databases.
  • Assist in quality assurance and validation to identify data inconsistencies or errors.
  • Prepare preliminary tables, charts, and graphs for economic indicators and reports.
  • Provide administrative support for workshops, meetings, and fieldwork activities.

Selection Criteria

Interested candidates should demonstrate they meet the following minimum requirements:

Academic Background and Relevant Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Economics, Statistics or a related field. Minimum of one (1) year of relevant work experience for Diploma holders.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in data collection, community service, and public relations for those with a PSSC/Form 7 qualification.

Competencies

  • Good analytical skills - identifying price changes, verifying outliers, and ensuring data consistency
  • Computer literate with good skills in common software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Good communication skills; fluent in English and Tongan, both written and spoken language

The objective of the recruitment of the Assistant Statistician – Data Collection for Historical Documentation & Research is to provide specialised research and qualitative data support to the Tonga Statistics Department (TSD). The individual will be responsible for identifying founding pioneers, tracing ministerial leadership, and documenting the evolution of the department’s approved budget since its inception. This work will culminate in the assembly of primary source materials to produce a commemorative book or booklet celebrating the 70th anniversary of Tonga’s Population Census.

  • Duration: Short-term position for 6 months, including a 1-month probationary period.
  • Tentative Start Date: 18 March 2026.
  • Location: The Assistant will be based at the TSD office in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.

The Assistant Statisticians will work under the management of the Government Statistician and the Project Coordinator to:

  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of historical records to identify the founders and original staff of the Statistics Office.
  • Trace and document the chronological lineage of Ministers responsible for the Department since its implementation.
  • Research and compile a record of the approved annual budgets for the office from its inception to the present day.
  • Draft structured interview questions and guides tailored for key stakeholders, including retired staff and former government officials.
  • Organise and conduct one-on-one interviews and focus group discussions to capture oral histories and institutional memory.
  • Synthesise collected qualitative and quantitative data into a cohesive narrative for the commemorative booklet.
  • Maintain and update a dedicated electronic and physical filing system for all historical research materials.
  • Assist in the quality assurance and validation of historical facts and figures to ensure accuracy in the final publication.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for workshops or meetings related to the 70th-anniversary project.
  • Coordinate with other government divisions for data sharing and the verification of historical records.

Selection Criteria

Interested candidates should demonstrate they meet the following minimum requirements:

  • At least two (2) years of relevant work experience in research, qualitative data collection, or archival documentation.
  • Must possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to conduct high-level interviews and facilitate focus group discussions.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication; must be fully fluent in both English and Tongan.
