Invitations for Expression of Interest

Due date/time for Expression of Interest (EOI): Friday, 13th March 2026, no later than 4:30 pm local time.

The Government of Tonga has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Tonga Statistical Innovation and Capacity Building (SICBT) Project. It intends to apply part of the proceeds to the recruitment of an Assistant Statistician (Tourism Statistics).

The objective of this assignment is to recruit an Assistant Statistician (Tourism Statistics) to support the execution of field-level data collection, manage survey logistics, and facilitate inter-agency coordination. The Assistant will be responsible for gathering the raw data required to populate the TSA framework and support the TSD Economics Division.

• Duration: Short-term position for 6 months, including a 1-month probationary period.
• Tentative Start Date: 18 March 2026.
• Location: The Assistant will be based at the TSD office in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.

The Assistant Statistician (Tourism Statistics) will provide essential support to the Economics Division, including:

• Execute surveys to capture a comprehensive view of the sector, including but not limited to Accommodation Surveys, Maritime Tourism, e.g., conducting Yacht and Cruise Ship surveys to measure the economic impact of sea-based visitors.
• Manage the compilation of traveller contact information to facilitate International Visitor Surveys (IVS), working in close collaboration with the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) in Suva, Fiji.
• Coordinate with relevant line ministries and border agencies to retrieve administrative data and ensure the smooth flow of information to the TSD.
• Perform preliminary data entry and basic cleaning of survey results to prepare them for analysis by the Economics team.
• Assist in the logistical planning of workshops, stakeholder meetings, and technical briefings (both virtual and face-to-face).

Selection Criteria

Interested candidates should demonstrate they meet the following minimum requirements:

• A Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Economics, Statistics, Tourism Management, or a related field. Minimum of one (1) year of relevant work experience for Diploma holders.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in data collection, community service, and public relations for those with a PSSC/Form 7 qualification.

The Assistant Statistician (Tourism Statistics) will be selected through the Individual Consultant Selection method in accordance with the World Bank Procurement Regulations for IPF Borrowers of September 2025.
