         Medewerkers en studenten van de Universiteit Leiden gebruiken voor hun werk of studie een grote diversiteit aan applicaties. Welke applicaties gebruikt worden hangt voor een deel af van de afdeling, opleiding, functie en/of de specifieke situatie van de medewerker of de student.

         Met de ingebruikname van een softwaredistributiedienst wil de universiteit de betreffende dienstverlening uitbreiden naar eigen devices (met name laptops) en studenten. De faculteit der Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen (FWN) loopt met haar behoefte voor deze uitbreiding voorop, met als aanleiding dat de computerzalen van FWN, waar studenten applicaties kunnen gebruiken op geconfigureerde PC’s, binnen een tijdsbestek van één tot twee jaren uitgefaseerd en ontmanteld worden.
