         De opdracht bestaat uit het vaststellen van de oorzaken van schade en het opstellen van schaderapporten ten behoeve van de Commissie Mijnbouwschade, zodat de Commissie Mijnbouw advies uit kan brengen over schademeldingen als gevolg van bewegingen van de bodem door de aanleg en exploitatie van mijnbouwwerken in Nederland. Hierbij wordt in acht genomen de inhoud van het Instellingsbesluit en de verplichting van de Commissie Mijnbouwschade om overeenkomstig de bepalingen van het civiele aansprakelijkheids- en schadevergoedingsrecht aan de Schademelder en de mijnbouwonderneming advies uit te brengen.
