MALDI-TOF/TOF
Swift and accurate characterization of important synthetic and natural compounds is achievable through MALDI-TOF (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization - Time of Flight) mass spectrometry. This method has become renowned for determining the molecular weight of large molecules, including biomolecules such as proteins, glycans, and oligonucleotides. We aim to acquire a replacement MALDI-TOF so that researchers can efficiently synthesize and characterize molecules for subsequent material and biological tests or vaccine development. The versatility of the instrument, coupled with its precision and speed, holds immense value for streamlining the synthesis of various compounds. Research groups seeking mass spectrometric characterization of large molecules stand to gain substantial benefits by incorporating this instrument into their work.
The new MALDI Tof instrument should have a fully automated introduction system and an ion source with a solid-state laser whose repetition rate is adjustable up to 2000 Hz for fast acquisition which will minimize sample consumption and provide high sensitivity. Having a Tof analyzer within the instrument would guarantee positive and negative ion mode and provide a mass range up to 500 kDa. To achieve the highest sensitivity, the ion source and ion reflector should be gridless in design, while ion source should also be self-cleaning via an infrared laser to prevent premature contamination. The vacuum system of the instrument should contain a turbomolecular pump with oil-free backing pump. Lastly, the instrument should be equipped with a camera system to observe the sample during laser bombardment, control, recording, and evaluation software.
