Section II: Object
Acquisition of an ESLFemto laser ablation system
StarPlan is a former center of excellence housed at the Globe Institute at the SUND faculty of Copenhagen University. The center employs cosmochemistry, astrophysics and astronomy researchers and has an extensive state-of-the-art laboratory that includes clean lab facilities and multiple mass spectrometers.
We intend to purchase an ESLFemto (femtosecond) laser ablation system that can be connected to iCAP ICPMS and MC-ICPMS systems already present at StarPlan facilities. This instrument will be used to measure chemical and isotope compositions over a wide element range for small components within meteorites and terrestrial samples. It will also be used to mill out small samples that are impossible to excavate with other known techniques.
Section IV: Procedure
The system has several ESLFemto specs include patent numbers.
Sample Chamber:
• Typhoon purge, an in-chamber fluid handling system improves the purge
performance (air removal and replacement with He) of the TwoVol3 ablation
cell. When this method is employed, the TwoVol3 can be effectively purged
and provide a stable ICP-MS background in less than 5 minutes. Importantly,
the air is efficiently removed from all regions of the TwoVol3 cell which also
ensure the same result is obtained within all regions of the cell Patents:

• Bypass valve when using high speed imaging configuration. The bypass pin of
the TwoVol3 physically blocks the bottom of the “cup” such that flow to the
ICP is stopped. This eliminates the need for a bypass valve in the transport
tubing between cell and ICP which results in a linear and uninterrupted aerosol
flow and allows the user to switch samples without need to extinguish the ICP.

WO 2019 236698 A1
Active Spot Size Control:
• ESL’s patented spot size control between 1 and 65 μm, selectable in 1 μm
increments using the IVA; the only system to provide such flexibility. Patent
numbers:
EP 2795283 B1
WO 2013 095786 A1
Software:
• High stage position return accuracy: ImageLock. ActiveView2 pattern
recognition-based feature developed to improve stage return accuracy and
provide less than 1 micron error when using the TwoVol2. When enabled the
user can have confidence that they are analyzing the desired feature or region
of a sample, particularly for long, unattended analysis. Patent numbers:
WO 2014 144012 A1
• Spectroscopy data display within the laser software: allows the LA instrument
to grab the data from the ICPMS instrument and display the data via overlay
on the laser ablation instrument display itself. Patent numbers:
EP 3968005 A1
WO 2013 101745 A1
System:
• Touchscreen mounted on the system providing operators with a view of the
sample via the off-axis wide-angle camera and touch input capability to drive
the stages to the desired location. Patent numbers:
EP 2553552 B1
WO 2011 123667 A2
LA-ICP interface:
• The DCI linking the laser ablation chamber with the torch of the ICP, provides
an single uninterrupted conduit to minimise particle dispersion and thus improve washout times of all ESL chambers including the TwoVol2. The DCI is
easy to install (plug-and-play) and is self-aligning relative to the ICPMS cones,
in combination with delivery the particles directly to the base of the plasma
(within the torch), this ensures maximum transmission and thus sensitivity is
achieved. Patent numbers:
