Canmore’s open spaces and trails are vital to the health, well-being, and vibrancy of the community. They provide essential spaces for recreation, social interactions, connecting with nature, and cultural celebrations, contributing to Canmore’s unique character and quality of life. The Town relies on several documents to guide the planning and development of these spaces. The Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Integrated Transportation Plan (ITP) provide broad policy direction. At the same time, the Open Space and Trails Plan (OSTP) and Open Space Development Guidelines (OSDG) set more detailed guidance on how parks, open spaces and trails are acquired, located, used, and developed. Developed at different times, the OSDG (2005) and OSTP (2015, amended 2021) do not fully align with one another or accurately reflect Canmore’s current state. Since their adoption, the town has experienced demographic shifts, changing recreational needs, increasing development pressures, and new strategic direction; including an increased emphasis on environmental protection, climate resilience, and community livability/well-being. As a result, these documents need to be reviewed and updated to ensure they reflect current community needs and align with the new Town’s policies. The Open Space and Trail Plan Update project will update and integrate the OSTP and OSDG into a single, comprehensive planning document that provides clear, consistent direction for the acquisition and development of Canmore’s parks, open spaces, and trails. The updated plan will align with current municipal plans and policies and reflect the community’s needs and expectations.
