Fredericton has been taking a proactive approach to the hazards of climate change for many decades and adopted its Climate Change Adaptation Plan in 2020. Climate change is intensifying
wildfire risks in Fredericton. Rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and longer dry periods create more favourable conditions for wildfires, even in areas that were once
considered low risk. These trends are expected to continue, and the expansion of fire-prone ecosystems is already evident based
on the fires that occurred in Atlantic Canada in the spring of 2023 and the summer of 2025.
This initiative is a component of an overarching program to identify and respond to wildfire risk in Fredericton. As our population increases, so too does the density of our communities.
Fredericton is home to a mature and expansive urban forest. As new communities are developed and densification of building stock takes place, wildfire risk may be increased, especially in
proximity to Fredericton"s mature urban forest. Fredericton"s wildfire risk management program is intended to inform and
guide city planning and development, fire department preparedness, as well as Fredericton"s Parks and Trees division to better protect Fredericton"s residents, property, and environment.
