Description
The Archives of Ontario (AO) is seeking a vendor to curate, design, fabricate and install a new onsite exhibit on the topic of Black history.
Exhibits are central to the business of the archives sector. Their purpose is to facilitate public engagement with archival records, to engage new and diverse audiences and inspire creative
thinking, and to develop new partnerships. Exhibits demonstrate the wide variety of media held by modern archival institutions. They show how historians extrapolate new stories from a careful
reading of archival sources. At their best, archival exhibits challenge received wisdom about our shared past and contribute to the ongoing social and cultural reimagining of a given place
and its people.
A new onsite exhibit, which will be located at the Archives of Ontario building, will further the AO’s reputation as a leader in Ontario’s archives and museums sector and support its
mandate for community engagement and co-creation.
The onsite exhibit forms the core element of a wider AO initiative titled “Reclaiming Black Memory” (RBM). This initiative, which will also include a series of onsite and offsite
public-facing educational programs and activities, seeks to challenge dominant narratives about Black people that exist within institutional archives. The exhibit will profoundly revitalize
and expand our approach to community involvement as part of exhibit creation and programming, bringing together community and institutional Black archival collections to offer a
counter-narrative that challenges systemic exclusions and omissions.
Scope of Work
The Vendor will provide curate, design and fabricate an immersive physical experience that challenges dominant narratives about Black history in Ontario — i.e., stories rooted in slavery
and defined primarily by white supremacy — by highlighting records that evoke and encourage learning about the everyday yet vital experiences of past and contemporary Black
communities.
The Vendor’s services will include but may not be limited to:
• Curatorial services, including developing the overall curatorial vision and interpretive plan for the exhibit with the support of AO staff;
• Design services, including providing a design for an immersive physical experience based on the curator and the AO’s plan for the exhibit;
• Exhibit fabrication and installation based on the approved design.
The Vendor will be required to coordinate with the AO’s exhibit team when researching and selecting the content for the exhibit to ensure a focus on amplifying Black voices and engaging new
audiences.
The Vendor will also provide a comprehensive plan for installing and maintaining the design.
The following are target dates for the exhibit and may be subject to change, at the sole discretion of AO:
Vendor onboarding – February 2025
Exhibit Launch – February 2026
