APEX Accelerators are an official government contracting resource for small businesses. Find your local APEX Accelerator (opens in new window) for free government expertise related to contract opportunities.
APEX Accelerators are funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the Department of Defense.
The APEX Accelerators program was formerly known as the Procurement Technical Assistance Program (opens in new window) (PTAP).
To enable project success, ORNL is looking to expand upon existing additive manufacturing capabilities through standing-up powder feedstock fabrication capability. The system specifications that are required are listed below. The powder atomizer system will allow for fabrication of metallic refractory powders in a clean vacuum environment through the atomization of metallic rods through the induction melting. The atomizer will also conform to space requirements listed below. Certain non-negotiable features have been identified for the atomizer, along with a stretch goal. Listed below, are the requirements for a machine that is being pursued…
Specifications:
Capable of induction melting refractory alloys such as niobium and molybdenum with a bar stock of 50mm diameter minimum and 1,000 mm in length
Accept metallic rods with diameters up to a maximum of 150mm
Must be able to operate on combination of inert gases including helium, argon, and nitrogen
Must have a safe emergency shutdown procedure in the event of power and water loss
System must be equipped with at least one safety pressure relief valve for the atomization chamber
System must fit within a 35x35’ footprint, and a 35’ height
Supplier must be willing and able to conform or all ORNL safety procedures
Buyoff material to be atomized is buyer supplied C103 rod
System electronics must conform to NFPA 499 where applicable
Atomizer must begin delivery in the Fall of 2025 for January 2026 commissioning.
Stretch Goal:
Modular system that can be upgradeable to allow for conversion in melting capabilities from induction melting or rods to plasma arc melting.
