Feasibility study: Setting up a Social Enterprise at Save the Children South Africa
2. Background
Save the Children, a national and international organization, has been tasked with the development and execution of programs to assist the most vulnerable children during times of emergency for
more than a century. By leveraging evidence-based programming to support interventions and adjusting to changing circumstances, we have built the largest independent child rights movement
globally. Save the Children, despite its global reach, operates on a community-based model, utilizing partnerships and networks on the ground to gain access to the most inaccessible regions. We
offer technical support for program advocacy, implementation, and monitoring, coordination support for our partners throughout the research dissemination, review, and reporting phases, and
implementation considerations for what works for children by leveraging the networks, capabilities, and resources of our organization.
Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) is a local registered Non-Profit Organization (NPO) and a pioneer for children’s rights. Through integrated and holistic programmes, SCSA aims to support children between 0 and 24 years, to achieve their full potential. SCSA operates from its head office in Pretoria with implementing offices in South Africa, operating in the most marginalised and rural districts of Free State, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and Gauteng. SCSA focuses on four thematic areas: Child Rights Governance is the core theme, Child Protection, which includes Migration and Displacement is another theme, as well as Education and Health & Nutrition. Environmental sustainability and climate change, gender transformation, social inclusion are the crosscutting themes of SCSA programmes. The SCSA strategic goal is to see a South Africa with an accountable child rights governance system that facilitates the survival, protection, development and participation of all children by 2030. Please visit the SCSA website for more information on the mission and vision.
Lead by a Senior Management Team and governed by a board of trustees, Save the Children South Africa is ideally placed to partner for local and impactful interventions. Save the Children South Africa is audited annually and has a strong management team of four Directors led by the CEO. Technical expertise is strengthened through Thematic Leads in the areas of Education, Health & Nutrition, Child Rights, Child Protection and Migration and Displacement. Skilled programme and Project Managers support the quality implementation of innovative interventions. Senior staff participate in global technical working groups and in local child rights orientated advocacy forums. Strong operational support is provided by the finance, fundraising, advocacy & communications and monitoring and evaluation departments.
3. Purpose and objective of the consultancy:
SCSA wishes to contract a consultant to conduct a feasibility study which will serve as a map to launching a social enterprise at SCSA. The Social Enterprise will sit within the SCSA
organisation but act as a separate income generating arm, raising funds for the organisation.
Having considered the mission and objectives of the organization, its programmes and competencies, and identifying the most pressing social and environmental issues that affect children like poverty, lack of access to education, healthcare, or sanitation, conduct a feasibility study that address these challenges through a social enterprise model.
