Tablets for Field Work and Trainings

Display & Input

Screen: 10”–12” FHD+ (16:10 ratio); 800+ nits sunlight-readable with anti-glare.

Touch: Multi-touch (glove/wet finger) + Active Stylus (Wacom/EMR/USI) for precise drawing.

GPS & Positioning

Built-in GPS preferable (5-10m standalone accuracy acceptable, used primarily for navigation and cross-referencing with handheld GPS for mapping measurements). It must be possible to connect to a separate high accuracy GNSS antenna (see specifications under GNSS) and perform GNSS measurements by using the QField mapping software installed in the tablet. The external GNSS antenna should be integrated in the mapping functions so that it is possible to switch between image delineation and external GNSS antenna measurements.

It is of high importance that the field tablet and GNSS antenna have integrated functionality so that it is possible to use the image for delineation in QField in the tablet, and then (within the same parcel surveying) be able to switch to the high precision GNSS antenna if the boundary vertice (as indicated on the ground by the land holder) is not visible in the image.

Hardware: 16GB RAM minimum; Intel Core i5 (8th Gen+) or equivalent ARM. 256GB+ SSD (micro SD expandable). 8–10 hours’ life; hot-swappable; supports solar/PD charging (18W+).

GIS & Connectivity

Mapping: Internal GPS for approximate location (5-10m) + support for high-accuracy external GNSS (via QField).

Network: 4G LTE/5G compatible with Sierra Leone networks (Orange/One Mobile); Wi-Fi & Bluetooth.

Software: Supports SL coordinate systems (WGS84 UTM 28N/29N) and standard layers (SHP, KML, Geo TIFF).

Ruggedness & OS

Durability: IP67 rating; MIL-STD-810G/H; 1.2m drop resistance onto concrete.

Environment: Operating range 0°C to 50°C; lightweight (<1.5kg).

OS: Windows 10/11 Pro (for full desktop GIS and Support for stylus-based drawing and annotation in GIS applications. OS update/support lifecycle: Windows: Security updates supported through at least 2028.

GPS / GNSS - Equipment Sets

Core requirement: The GNSS should be able to connect to / use the field tablet (as specified under the tablet item) as software panel. It should be possible to perform GNSS measurements (as per the accuracy demands specified below) by using the QField mapping software in the field tablet.

Operational: Must support NTRIP Client protocol for connection to the Sierra Leone CORS Network. Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) for immediate precision and Post-Processed Kinematic (PPK) as a redundancy for areas with poor cellular coverage. Hardware is open-format (RTCM 3.x) to be compatible with CORS signals. The receiver must be capable of broadcasting NMEA data over Bluetooth to the field tablet, ensuring seamless position override within the QField application; Multi-constellation, RTK/CORS capable;

Data Management & Storage: Minimum 8GB for raw observation logging (essential for PPK backup). Direct export or software conversion to SHP, DXF, KML, and CSV; Full support for WGS84 UTM Zone 28N and 29N (Sierra Leone’s primary zones) and the ability to upload custom Local Grid transformation parameters.

Communication & User Interface: Bluetooth 4.0 (Dual mode) for tablet connection; Wi-Fi 802.11n for network tethering/NTRIP. USB-C for fast data transfer and charging; the receiver should have LED indicators for: Power, Satellite Tracking, Correction Signal, and Bluetooth Status.

Physical: IP67 (Dustproof; waterproof immersion up to 1m). Industrial grade (suitable for tropical climates). Maximum 1.5 kg (including battery) to ensure user comfort during long field days. Designed for one-handed operation with secure strap attachments.

Power System: Minimum 10 hours of active RTK/CORS tracking. Hot-swappable lithium-ion batteries. Each unit must include one internal battery plus one spare battery as a standard set.

Mounting & Safety: Non-metallic (Fiberglass or Carbon Fiber). This is a critical safety requirement for Sierra Leone’s rainy season to minimize lightning conductivity. Telescopic or sectional; adjustable from 1.2m to 2.0m. standard 5/8" threaded stud for receiver; includes a rugged tablet bracket.

QField licenses

QField Cloud subscriptions for 115 users (specify plan type: Pro plan €12/month per user OR Organization plan €16/user/month).

For enabling partially online work QField Cloud needs to get as a separate paid subscription for teams’ collaboration. If procurement is for support/training instead, specify: “QField deployment, training, and support services for 115 users” QField (the mobile app) is free and open source (GPL v2+), but only up to limited number of users.
