COIN SORTER, COUNTER, AND TOP UP MACHINE
THE MACHINE: Industrial-grade coin sorter, that will count coins and then allow the customer to top up his debit card, virtual wallet, and donate to charitable organizations. There will be no issuance of the cash equivalent in paper bills.
THE CLOSEST REFERENCE TO WHAT WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH IS THAT BY COINSTAR OF THE UNITED STATES.
HERE ARE THE SPECS
USER INTERFACE: Programmable user interface, likely heavy duty touchscreen. (Note: an alternative approach would be to use a simple LCD display, non touchscreen, with metal buttons around the LCD screen. The latter is similar to how old ATM machines are set up: an IP65 LCD screen with buttons on the left and right side of the screen, plus a numeric keypad.)
CPU AND PERIPHERALS. Programming shall be done using Linux. The CPU does not need to be too powerful. The equivalent processing power as that of a typical Raspberry Pi (4) would do. The other specs and peripherals include:
Front-facing Camera to take snapshots of customers; also as an optional feature, a PTZ camera that can rotate 360 degrees to check for unusual activity occurring by the machine, e.g., possible tampering.
We need the basic source code of the machine for our security and so that we can speed up development.
ALTERNATIVE SETUP. As an alternative to the SETUP described above, it may be possible to use an industrial-grade Android tablet as the touchscreen and display. This would make things cheaper, easier to maintain, and immediately replaceable, in case of damage.
POWER AND UPS. Power through a 220v AC source, with a servo-controlled AVR. Further, the machine is to be outfitted with a UPS with capacity to complete a transaction during a power outage. (2 kVA will be more than enough even with mechanical components doing coin sorting and counting.)
DURABILITY AND TAMPER-PROOFING. Overall, the machine must be industrial grade and weatherproof. It shall be installed indoors by commercial establishments.
NO CASH ISSUANCE. We are removing or not using the CASH EXCHANGE component. The Coin Counter will be used only for the following activities: topping up virtual wallets, donating to charities, and purchasing services and digital goods.
COIN SORTING. The machine must reliably, accurately account for a variety of coins. These coins have a diameter ranging from 24mm to 30mm, a thickness of 2mm, and weights from 5 to 12 grams. The machine must be able to detect, ignore, eject, or capture irregular coins or tokens. The target error rate of the machine must be no more than 1 in a 1,000:
COIN STORAGE FACILITY. The machine must be able to handle a total of approximately three (3) thousand coins, weighing approx 40 kg) and occupying an estimated volume of eight (8) liters. The storage compartment must be easily hauled and replaced with an empty one for ease of logistics. Further, it must be secure even from the people who will be picking up the machines.
COIN COUNTER MATCHING AND ACCOUNTING. Each COIN STORAGE CONTAINER will be be tagged by a QR code that will allow us to match the contents (and value) of the coins inside. The COIN COUNTER machine itself must have a QR CODE reader that identifies automatically the COIN STORAGE CONTAINER inserted or pulled out of the machine.
