The existing Auckland ferry fleet is comprised of around 29 vessels of varying age, size, customer amenity, specification, and capacity.
The majority of ferries in the Auckland fleet are nearing the end of their economic life, with an average age of more than 20 years, and/or are not providing the operational
flexibility/resilience, energy efficiency and customer experience required.
AT is committed to a transition to low emission vessels and reducing the environmental impact of the ferry fleet. This transition is underway, with four low emissions vessels arriving in
2026.
This Request for Tender (RFT) is an invitation to suitably qualified tenderers to submit a tender for the build of three 24m Metro Class Passenger Vessels. This RFT is a single-stage
procurement process.
The vessels sought in this procurement are intended to provide surety of services delivered to the ferry network, particularly the longer routes. This approach enables the required network
resilience while our low-emission vessels are commissioned, route tested and achieve enough in-service hours to provide the needed data sets for on-going low emissions investment across the
wider ferry network
