The Council’s recently published Long Term Plan (LTP) for 2024-2034 records that the replacement of the Pages Road Bridge is one of the planned activities for the next decade, and includes
budget for completion of the bridge by 2029/30.
Pages Road Bridge is a critical lifeline infrastructure connecting the eastern suburb of New Brighton across the Ōtākaro Avon River. The existing bridge, built in 1931 and damaged during the
2011 earthquakes, is no longer fit for purpose. The replacement of the bridge aligns to the community outcomes recorded in the LTP, creating a green, liveable city where our neighbourhoods are
accessible and well connected.
In addition, a new bridge is required for both evacuation egress and lifeline infrastructure for use in an emergency event. Pages Road bridge is the key access route and emergency egress road
access across the Ōtākaro Avon River into the suburb of New Brighton. It’s one of only three bridges that cross the Ōtākaro Avon River to allow access into the eastern area of the city.
