Environment Canterbury is concerned about the potential spread of Sabella spallanzanii in Lyttelton Whakaraupō and need more information on its distribution for biosecurity planning
purposes.
Biosecurity New Zealand (BNZ) has created a methodology for carrying out a delimiting survey of in Whakaraupō which may be used for guidance in developing a delimiting survey. Refer to
Attachment 1: Methodology for a delimiting survey for the presence of Sabella spallanzanii in Lyttelton Whakaraupō. In this document the objectives are described as:
Primary objectives:
1. To determine where Sabella has become established in Lyttelton Whakaraupō and whether it can be locally eliminated;
2. To remove all Sabella detected, where feasible, to preserve future biosecurity response/management options.
Secondary objective:
3. To obtain a preliminary understanding of the population characteristics (including densities and reproductive state) of Sabella in Lyttelton/Whakaraupo.
