Determining Groundwater dependency and vulnerability in Megacities (Kinshasa, Johannesburg, Luanda)
ZA-SADC-GMI-418179-CS-CQS
SADC-GMI Background
The Southern African Development Community Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI), a subsidiary of the SADC Secretariat, is established as a Centre of Excellence on sustainable groundwater management issues in the SADC region, hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Pretoria, South Africa on behalf of and under the strategic guidance of the SADC Secretariat, Directorate of Infrastructure and Services, in Gaborone, Botswana.
Assignment Background
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is home to about thirty (30) transboundary aquifers (TBAs) that support the primary water needs and livelihoods of a significant portion of the region"s population. Due to their size, rapid urbanization, and environmental factors, several megacities in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region face urgent and significant groundwater dependency and vulnerability issues. Rapid population growth and urban expansion strain water resources, increasing groundwater demand. Moreover, the impacts of climate change lead to changing precipitation patterns, temperature increases, and sea-level rise, which affect groundwater recharge rates and quality. These challenges call for comprehensive research to determine groundwater"s dependency on and vulnerability in Megacities and Coastal cities in the SADC region.
This request for an Expression of Interest is to enlist the services of a consulting firm to undertake the project "Determining Groundwater Dependency and Vulnerability in Megacities (Kinshasa, Johannesburg, and Luanda). The selected firm will conduct comprehensive research, analyze the data, and provide actionable recommendations to address the identified issues.
The objective of the assignment
This assignment"s overall objective is to Determine groundwater"s dependency on and vulnerability in the Megacities of Johannesburg, Kinshasa, and Luanda.
