The Youth Apprenticeship Connections Program (YACP) prioritizes vocational service delivery gaps for youth and young adults ages 16-24 who are currently in care or transitioning from care. The
YACP achieves the following objectives:
1) Establish a youth apprenticeship connections program model that removes barriers and proactively mitigates constraints to pursuing apprenticeships and vocational goals.
2) Establish a multicomponent and innovative youth apprenticeship connections program model that incorporates key services and supports.
3) Establish a youth apprenticeship connections program that will complement existing youth apprenticeship services and supports, addressing youth apprenticeship geographic service area
gaps.
The YACP is delivered province-wide with two mobile service teams providing services for Northern Alberta and Southern Alberta addressing the needs of eligible youth and young adults in both
urban and rural communities. Services include:
1) Recruitment and Engagement: Activities designed for ease-of access, minimal barriers to entry and a continuum of support customized to each client, recognizing each client will be at
different starting places in their exploration of the trades, their employment journey, and will have varying support and assistance needs. The components of service develop include the
following:
2) Skilled Trades Career Exploration and Exposure: Trade Showcases/Fairs, Career Insights Presentations, Worksite Tours, Career Conversations, and Trade Pathways Supports.
3) Work Experience: One-on-one supports to organize work experience and volunteer opportunities, supporting high school students in connecting with the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP),
assist with fulfilling pre-requisites such as safety programming, employer sponsorship, My Alberta Digital ID, and formal trades education applications. Includes pre-employment supports, work
search supports, and wrap-around supports.
4) Youth Involvement and Leadership: Provide opportunities for youth and young adults to develop connections, networks, and fostering meaningful relationships. Engage youth and young adults
voices in program continuous improvement.
5) Capacity and Outcomes: Consistently provide successful apprenticeship services through mobile delivery teams throughout Alberta to 100 or more active youth in care and young adults.
6) Retention: Continue to support clients and employers with retention once a position has been found. This may include assistance at the job site or debriefing and strategizing challenging
situations after work hours.
Services will be strength-based, relationship focused and inclusive, promoting the reduction of barriers while using a positive youth development approach.
