Description

PROJECT OVERVIEW a) Project Background The Province provides expertise to analyze strategic opportunities to the agri-food industry and policy analysis. As a part of this mandate, the Province is undertaking a multi-year plan to deliver and enhance the AgriProfit$ Business Analysis and Research Program (AgriProfit$). AgriProfit$, administered by the Province, collects and analyzes data from Alberta field crop and livestock producers to generate cost of production benchmarks and customized business analysis reports for the participants. This information is critical to AFSC’s Business Risk Management (BRM) programming and is also widely used to understand trends, patterns, performance, and the overall economics of Alberta’s agricultural sector. Primary users include government and policy makers, farmers and producers, and researchers and academic institutions. 1. Government and Policy Makers: Government economists, analysts, and policy makers use AgriProfit$ reports to support policy development and analysis. The data is used to calculate AgriStability payments and to support AFSC’s BRM programs. Sector‑specific cost‑of‑production information also supports the Farm Fuel Benefit Program in determining farmer eligibility. The data has also been used to defend Alberta"s interests in trade disputes and negotiations. 2. Farmers and Producers: The program provides customized cost‑of‑production and physical performance reports that enable farmers and producers to evaluate business performance, assess production and management options, and make informed enterprise planning decisions. Producers can also compare their results against industry averages and provincial benchmarks. 3. Research and Academia: Researchers and academic institutions use AgriProfit$ information for applied research, analyzing trends in farm costs of production, returns, and productivity to support studies and evidence-based insights in the agriculture sector. In order to collect the data, producers are recruited to voluntarily participate (“Participants”) throughout the year. Data is collected related to the financial, production and physical data of key farm commodities (whole farm, dryland crops, and livestock). Participants are requested to complete an excel data collection tool and return same to the Economics Section. To facilitate the effectiveness and completion of AgriProfit$, the Province will use the services of a Contractor to assist Participants with the data collection process as required under the AgriProfit$ program. The Contractor contacts Participants to arrange meetings and provide guidance to complete the survey. The Contractor will collect, and return completed excel spreadsheets to the Province. The Contractor also supports ongoing improvements, and maintenance for the AgriProfit$ analysis program and related data tools. This project aims to collect and analyze producers’ crop and livestock data for the two years of 2026 and 2027. The target number of participants in AgriProfit$ surveys is 70 for the dryland crop and livestock enterprise for each Contract year. The Economics Section will generate enterprise economic reports that provide an analysis of the revenue, costs and profitability of each enterprise. This analysis is available for whole farm, dryland crops, and livestock enterprises, and includes production costs and returns on a per unit basis. The physical performance report summarizes measurable production metrics for each enterprise. Each enterprise results are also compared to the provincial average and top one-third producers in the regions, providing benchmark for the evaluation of performance. Economic benchmarks are provided to compare the enterprise performance to “peers” by region, type of operation, and management practices. These benchmarks are also published on the Agriculture and Irrigation AgriProfit$ website. b) Project Objectives To collect farm enterprise data over a two-year period and provide ongoing maintenance and improvements to the AgriProfit$ analysis program. c) Project Structure/Business Model • To collect financial, production and physical data for the key farm commodities including whole farm operations, dryland crops, and livestock over a two-year period. • Promote the AgriProfit$ program and its benefits to producers, strengthen participation, and improve overall program effectiveness by explaining the AgriProfit$ program, its outcomes, and related reports to participants, with support from the sector economist (livestock or crop). • To provide maintenance and implement necessary improvements for the AgriProfit$ analysis program such as AgriProfit$ data application, database transfer, and automatic report generation. d) Key Stakeholders Key stakeholders include: • Agriculture producers (livestock and crop operations) – providing the information needed to help assess practical, on-farm management options; • Alberta Government - monitor the ongoing economic and financial performance of Alberta’s Agriculture industry, and helps support AFSC Business Risk Management (BRM) suite of programs; Sector‑specific cost‑of‑production information also supports the Farm Fuel Benefit Program in determining farmer eligibility • Industry groups and associations – providing performance indicators relating to industry competitiveness; • Applied Research and Extension Council of Alberta (ARECA) and academia - Collaborative research efforts investigating a range of issues such as productive efficiency in agriculture, agricultural risk management, environmental issues and agricultural production management, and the farm level economics of ecosystem service production.
