Description

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (the CPSBC) regulates the practice of medicine under the authority of provincial law, the Health Professions Act and the Bylaws made under the Act. All physicians and surgeons who practise medicine in the province must be registrants of the CPSBC.
As of April 1, 2026, the CPSBC will regulate the practice of medicine under the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA). The HPOA lays the groundwork for transforming how regulators fulfill their mandate to protect the public and requires all regulatory colleges to

• protect the public from harm and discrimination,
• support and promote awareness of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and UNDRIP and DRIPA,
• take anti-discriminatory measures, and
• be fair and transparent while respecting the privacy rights of individuals.
• The new regulations will also add new health professions to BC’s health regulatory framework. The following four new professions (the Professions) will be regulated by CPSBC starting November 29, 2027.
• clinical perfusionists
• medical laboratory technologists
• radiation therapists
• respiratory therapists
