The Economics Section of the Trade, Economics, and Data Analytics Branch aims to support decision making by conducting economic analysis, developing economic models and providing strategic
advice to the agricultural stakeholders.
One of the major components of this initiative is the AgriProfit$ database. This database comprises farm economics data to calculate cost of production, profitability analysis, and developing
benchmarks. This data is very helpful for producers, researchers, industry stakeholders, and government’s policy making for informed decision making related to productivity, profitability,
and sustainability. This database plays a key role for generating benchmarks, analyzing cost, yield, profitability, and returns for various crops and livestock enterprises. These benchmarks
play a significant role for identifying trends, assessing the impact of policy interventions and developing and revising the policies.
This AgriProfit$ database also supports the internal analytics and long-term program evaluation for Alberta’s agriculture and irrigation sector. The project is essential to completing the
AgriProfit$ enhancements, including finalizing whole-farm and enterprise reporting systems and centralizing the Dairy, Greenhouse, and Beekeeping databases. It also plays a critical role in
supporting the Business Risk Management (BRM) suite of programs, which rely on impartial, timely cost-of-production data to calculate margins and validate claims for Alberta producers each
year.
In recent years, significant progress has been made towards the streamlining of this database. While the foundational work has been completed, further improvements are required to address the
outstanding issues such as performance of the database, data validation and reporting capabilities.
The purpose of this contract is to review the current system, suggest technical changes, conduct rigorous testing (report generation) and provide propositions and methods to meet the
needs/requirements of the evolving AgriProfit$ database.
Project Objectives: To improve the AgriProfit$ database performance, streamline reporting, and enhance the program’s ability to generate timely, accurate benchmarks for Alberta producers and
policy makers.
Project Structure/Business Model:
The Province will require the following services:
• Technical review and testing of the AgriProfit$ Data and Report applications to improve performance relating to data input, data validation, individual producer report generation and
benchmark report generation.
• Integration of the Dairy, Greenhouse Crops, and Beekeeping databases into the main AgriProfit$ MS-Access system.
• Develop a detailed methodology for data integration, AgriProfit$ modelling, and benchmark report generation.
• Provide recommendations for future transition to a web-based application.
