Description

The Town invites prospective non-profit organizations to submit a proposal for the operations of a VIC that meets the needs of visitors and residents, that conveys the quality, sustainability authenticity of Smithers’ recreational and cultural offerings, and demonstrates a deep understanding of human wants and needs with respect to discovery of place and access to information.

In British Columbia, it is common practice for municipalities to partner with local non-profit organizations to operate community VICs. This partnership model is designed to be mutually beneficial:
• Municipality contribution: The municipality provides existing infrastructure or a building for the VIC"s operation. In addition, the municipality supports the initiative through an annual fee-for-service arrangement.
• Non-Profit Organization: The selected non-profit operates the VIC, using the fee-for-service funding to support visitor services and cover a portion of its general operating expenses. This setup often allows the non-profit to maintain a physical presence in the community without the full burden of infrastructure costs.
