This pilot study will deliver multiple strategic benefits:

1. Public Health Impact: Enables early intervention and prevention strategies, contributing to reduced chronic disease burden and associated healthcare costs.

2. Policy Impact: Provides evidence to inform future regulations, contamination mitigation strategies, and health risk assessments.

3. Public Trust: Demonstrates CDC’s commitment to addressing public health concerns transparently and through evidence-based decision-making.

4. Future Readiness: Builds national capacity for larger-scale biomonitoring programs and aligns with global trends in chemical exposure surveillance, including for PFAS.

Delivery Models: The Pilot Study follows on from earlier scoping work, including consideration of pooled pathology approaches. Two potential models are proposed for supplier consideration but are not limited to these two options:?

Chemical Groups of Interest: The Pilot Human Biomonitoring Study may include 5 to 10 of the below listed range of chemical groups associated with potential human health or other impacts, including:

• Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
• Flame retardants (Polybrominated, Organophosphate)
• Persistent pesticides (e.g., organochlorines)
• Plasticizers (Phthalates, metabolites)

· Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

• Environmental phenols (e.g., triclocarban, parabens)
• Insecticide metabolites (Organophosphates, Pyrethroids)
• VOC metabolites
• Metals and trace elements
• Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH metabolites)
• Microplastics

Project Scope and Timeline: The aim of this initiative is to establish a sustainable, nationally coordinated program to monitor exposure to PFAS and other harmful chemicals in the Australian population over time. The pilot study is expected to run for approximately 12 months.
