The Lead Customer is proposing to establish a Standing Offer Arrangement to cover Geoscience Australia"s requirements include the examination and analysis of legacy well information, both physical and digital, to make data more accessible and useable for exploration and research users. All of Australia’s onshore and offshore petroleum and stratigraphic wells will be considered, and approximately 400 wells will be analysed over the next 10 years. The life of the project is currently planned to be at least 10 years with two data releases per year.

A principle of extracting the maximum amount of information from the legacy well data is being taken. Therefore, more measurements from physical samples are preferred, and value adding options through analysis and interpretation is also sought, to provide for capability or capacity gaps in Geoscience Australia’s own resources.

Wells will vary in terms of vintage, data quality, location and availability of sample material. Core and cuttings are located in various repositories across Australia including the ACT, QLD, NSW, NT, SA and VIC. Non-destructive methods are preferred when available.

Digitalisation to machine learning open industry standard formats of well data will be from digitised versions of paper well completion reports and logs in the case of older wells, to wells drilled within the past few years requiring simple reformatting and standardisation
