Achieving Australia’s renewable energy targets will require significant growth of the onshore wind farm industry. To support this growth while safeguarding threatened species, there is a need to understand the cumulative mortality impacts of wind farms on bird and bat species, and the effectiveness of mitigation and monitoring being implemented.
The department requires;
• Collection and collation of post construction fatality monitoring data from Australian wind farms for inclusion in the Commonwealth Biodiversity Database Repository.
• Analysis and review of post construction fatality monitoring data from Australian wind farms to assess the collision mortality impacts on bird and bat species and support sustainable growth of the industry. Analysis and review should include but is not limited to;
· estimated post construction mortality impacts on bird and bat species at individual wind farms, and cumulative estimated total mortalities for all operational wind farms;
· adequacy of post construction fatality monitoring methodologies used and identification of additional information and data required;
· potential drivers of mortality at different spatial scales;
· examination of detectability trials data to determine if reference values for bias corrections can be developed;
· determine how closely pre-construction risk assessments have been at predicting post construction mortality.
