Explanation

UWE have a strong track record in providing high quality ultrasound education and HEIW are funding existing students that will complete their studies beyond July 2023 on the current arrangement. Continuing to fund postgraduate ultrasound at UWE through the proposed Contract, will facilitate a community of practice of sonographers in health boards across Wales. This continuity will enable students to be supported by workplace colleagues on the same course, providing a continuous workforce pipeline within departments.

In addition, the ongoing use of the same education provider will support workplace supervisors to be able to continue to provide high quality competency assessments across Wales. Continuing to use the same education provider will mean continuity of processes which will reduce disruption to ultrasound departments. This is key as ultrasound waiting lists across Wales are 50% higher than pre-covid levels (Imaging Essentials Services Group, 2021).
