UNDP in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam collaborates closely with the Ministry of Finance Malaysia to implement sustainable development solutions. Selected by the Ministry
for a pilot project announced in Budget 2022, UNDP aims to establish equitable and sustainable ecotourism, aligning with the 12th Malaysia Plans goals. The Sustainable Tourism Recovery
project focuses on building community and MSME resilience in tourism, with outcomes targeting sustainable tourism environments, business resilience, and improved waste management on
islands. This assignment concentrates on two destinations: Mersing, Johor, and another proposed by the service provider. The objective is to develop a Preliminary Data Landscape Study
for establishing an International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatory (INSTO) in these destinations. This study will assess data gaps, evaluate the data ecosystem, and produce a
toolkit for INSTO implementation, aiming to guide other local councils toward sustainable tourism practices. The service provider will engage stakeholders, report lessons learned, and
offer recommendations for enhancing data ecosystem dynamics and institutional capacities.
