The Solid Waste Management (SWM) services in Jordan have been facing challenges prior to the influx of refugees due to the Syria Crisis, but the situation following this has put significant pressure to their operations. MSW collection, transfer and disposal has become a major challenge for local municipalities and Joint Service Councils (JSC) as well, whereas the average MSW generation rates have dramatically increased over the last six years, further stressing the existing MSW collection capacity, the limited airspace, and the operational capacity of the landfill and disposal facilities. Accordingly, the overall situation of the MSW management system in most of local municipalities of the Northern Governorate of Irbid is characterized by a massively littered environment: deteriorated MSW collection systems with damaged equipment and vehicles, a total absence of any MSW recycling, and inappropriate and dangerous waste disposal activities in the existing landfill site of Al-Akaider.

UNDP, through a fund from the Government of Canada, and through their project of Improving Solid Waste Management and Income Creation in Host Communities is at the stage of constructing a planned transfer station. The project also will focus on local female involvement through the generation of women’s employment opportunities, including at the transfer station and within the different communities of the 3 designated municipalities—Tabaqet Fahel, Mo’ath Bin Jabal, Sharhabeel Bin Hasna, in addition to strengthening the capacity of the women employed in the municipalities.
