Producing content for ILO Africa “100 Years 100 Lives”

• Background and context

The International Labour Organization will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2019. It will be the occasion for the ILO to show its relevance in today’s world and highlight how we are making a difference in changing people’s lives.

Several events - under the global umbrella of #ILO100 - will mark the Centenary throughout the region, involving ILO constituents. However, there is also a need to come up with a regional editorial product for a wider audience that will showcase the impact of the work we are doing on a daily basis to improve people’s lives all over the Africa Region.

2. Assignment

The Africa Region has decided to create a major communications product designed for the general public aimed at gathering 100 stories showing the positive influence ILO action has had on 100 individuals from all age groups.

The stories will be presented on a dedicated web page and possibly also in a print version. Stories will also be shared on ILO regional and national social media accounts.

The project should be completed during the first semester of 2019. Stories should be finalized by 31 March, 2019. However, more stories could be added throughout 2019 and beyond, since the idea is not to stop at the end of the Centenary year.

All ILO offices and projects in the region will be asked to provide material that can be the basis for at least one human interest story for each country that they cover. They should focus on one person who has been supported by the ILO one way or another (a programme description is not enough). Ideally, each story will also feature one high resolution photo or more.

A dedicated web page will show a clickable map of Africa as well as a list of topics.

Web users can then choose to click on the country of their choice or on one of the topics. We will also aim at featuring a variety of ages among the people that we portray to show we support people from all age groups (from babies to elderly people)

The web page will be in line with the #ILO100 guidelines provided by ILO DCOMM.

The dedicated webpage, story upload and web posting will be handled by the Regional Office or specific external contractors.

An Excol will take care of producing the 100 stories, working closely with those uploading the content and designing the webpage.

3. Scope of work for the consultant

a) A consultant will be hired to gather, write and/or edit existing stories.

b) Stories will be drafted in English for those coming from Anglophone countries or in French for stories coming from Francophone countries. Then, they can be translated into English/French as well as in other languages spoken in the region. Stories from Portuguese-speaking countries and Spanish-speaking countries will be produced preferably in English unless the content is provided in French.

c) The French name can be “100 ans, 100 histoires”

d) Each country office will be asked to provide material to create at least one story for each country that is covered by their office. At least one photo should be provided as well to illustrate the story.

f) The consultant will be responsible to provide finalized stories with the relevant photo (s) to the web uploader.

g) The consultant will make sure each country is covered by at least one story and that, similarly, stories cover the different selected topics.

h) As a first step, the consultant will scan the different ILO websites to gather content to create stories or adapt them in case they already exist. A minimum of 20 stories should be ready by 15 February

i) All stories should be finalized before 31 March, 2019.

j) The writing style needs to be as simple as possible, avoiding any kind of jargon.

k) Even though the consultant will not upload stories or be directly involved in the technical set-up of the webpage, he/she will be invited to provide advice on the design of the page.

l) Similarly, the regional office will be responsible for checking that stories are technically correct with the relevant technical officers.

4. Duration of work

From: 1 February to : 31 March 2019

5. Presentation of the offer

A technical offer with the following documents:

• The Curriculum Vitae (CV), indicating all previous experiences and contacts (email and phone number) of 3 references
• A brief description of the work methodology and the approach to perform the work according to the TORs

A financial proposal indicating the daily lump sum proposed, including all the fees.
